Saturday, February 12th, 2005- Shanghai, China

I spent the day with Sue (who speaks Mandarin) and Kira. We started off the day by going to the Jade Buddha Temple. It was quite vast with 70 Buddhist priests. The place was filled with many tourists, International and Chinese.
We then headed down to the marketplace where many vendors were very persistent while they forcefully tried to get us to buy their goods. One of the most amazing sights we saw in the market place was when a guy selling fireworks lit a small one with his cigarette and it flew into the shop across the street. Everyone in the shop scattered outside and were all quite unhappy. After shopping for a couple of hours we headed to touristier market place that was crowded and decorated for the recent New Year’s celebrations.
We stopped at this upstairs restaurant that was really crowded with people sitting at big, round tables eating. Each table had tons of plastic table clothes made from plastic bags and even before the patrons got up from their table the bus people would collect all the dishes in the top layer. We didn’t realize that they only had dishes with meat so I just sat and took in my surroundings.
We walked around the crowded market place some more and then headed down to The Bund, which is basically a riverfront. We took the monorail through a tunnel under the river and there was a little light show. From there we went by the TV Tower and went down the street to Shanghai’s tallest building, the Jin Mao Tower (88 stories). Sue and I went to the top and were able to see the whole city. As we were walking back towards The Bund we went through a rundown area with little kids trying to purse snatch or pick pocket. We were also surprised to see a little boy crouching down defecating on a tree.
We then ventured back to our hotel and then out to dinner at a chain pizza restaurant, Sarpinos, where the Chinese people at the next table kept staring at us.
-Dinner came out to be about $5 (personal pie, garlic bread, and soda)
-Pizza Hut her is a very elegant restaurant that many people like to go to.
